The Rev. John Rumple, Ph.D. ’11

Dr. John Rumple serves as a priest, New Testament scholar, and writer whose ministry integrates academic depth with pastoral authenticity. A 2011 graduate of The General Theological Seminary (Diploma in Anglican Studies), he was ordained in the Diocese of Indianapolis and has served parishes in both Indiana and Illinois. He has taught biblical studies and theology at Johnson University and the University of Indianapolis, and is developing The Progressive Catechism, a digital resource dedicated to discipling progressive Christians with theological rigor and spiritual depth.

By serving on the Alumni Executive Committee, he hopes to help strengthen the Seminary’s connection with its alumni, support clergy formation in a rapidly changing church, and ensure that GTS continues to form leaders rooted in both theological depth and pastoral courage.

John holds a Ph.D. in New Testament Language, Literature, and Theology from the University of Edinburgh, where he studied under Larry Hurtado and Helen Bond. His teaching and writing explore early Christian understandings of suffering and cruciform spirituality, and he is currently completing a scholarly devotional on their relevance for contemporary Christian discipleship. He has served on diocesan commissions, provided deanery leadership, and currently serves as Interim Rector of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, in the Diocese of Chicago.
