Position Overview

The Resident Vicar serves as the ordained priest-in-charge of the Episcopal Summer Chapel, providing liturgical leadership, pastoral care, and administrative oversight during the summer season. This seasonal clergy position is offered for the full 10-week term (June 28 to August 30, 2026) or two 5-week terms (June 28 to July 26, 2026, and August 2 to August 30, 2026) and requires an experienced Episcopal priest who can effectively lead worship, preach, and provide sacramental ministry while working collaboratively with the Chapel Committee to guide the spiritual life of the congregation.

St. Huberts is a small hamlet in the Town of Keene, New York, in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains. Known as the ‘High Peaks Region,’ it is a popular destination for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts due to its hundreds of miles of hiking trails, access to lakes, and cooler summer temperatures. Many of the congregants descend from generations of families who have spent summers in the Adirondacks. St. Huberts is 20 miles from Lake Placid and 25 miles from Lake Champlain.

Key Responsibilities

Liturgical and Sacramental Leadership

  • Preside over or assist at each Sunday service
  • Prepare and deliver sermons for the Sunday service with the option of hosting a visiting priest to preach 2-3 times throughout the summer
  • Celebrate the Holy Eucharist according to the Book of Common Prayer and Episcopal liturgical standards

Pastoral Ministry

  • Perform wedding ceremonies for couples requesting marriage at the chapel
  • Conduct baptisms for infants, children, and adults as requested
  • Officiate at memorial services and funeral rites as needed
  • Provide pastoral care and counseling to chapel members and visitors
  • Make pastoral visits to the sick, homebound, and those in need
  • Offer spiritual direction and guidance as requested

Administrative Leadership

  • Work with the Chapel Committee to implement decisions affecting parish life
  • Exercise good pastoral judgment in matters requiring immediate attention or decision
  • Participate in Chapel Committee meetings and provide a clerical perspective on parish matters
  • Coordinate with diocesan offices regarding canonical requirements and oversight
  • Oversee the scheduling and coordination of special services and events

Collaboration with the Chapel Committee

  • Work cooperatively with the Chapel Committee in all matters of parish governance
  • Provide theological and pastoral guidance for committee decisions
  • Respect the committee’s role in temporal affairs while maintaining appropriate clergy authority
  • Communicate effectively about parish needs, opportunities, and challenges

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Ordained priest in good standing within the Episcopal Church
  • Current license to officiate within the diocese or ability to obtain a seasonal license
  • Strong preaching and liturgical leadership skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with lay leadership
  • Experience in performing weddings, baptisms, and funeral rites
  • Adaptability to small parish dynamics and volunteer coordination
  • Willingness to relocate for the designated term to the Resident Vicar’s cottage in Keene Valley, New York.

Canonical Requirements

  • Valid Episcopal ordination and current good standing
  • Completion of all required diocesan training and background checks
  • Permission to officiate from the diocesan bishop

Time Commitment

  • Estimated 8-10 hours per week during active season
  • Presiding at all scheduled worship services (Sunday mornings at 10:00)
  • Availability for weddings, baptisms, and memorial services as scheduled
  • Participation in pre-season planning and orientation (typically May-June)

Reporting Structure

  • Reports to the Bishop of Albany, Jeremiah Williamson
  • Works collaboratively with the Chapel Committee
  • Maintains communication with diocesan staff as required

Compensation and Benefits

  • Stipend of $2,500 for the full 10-week term or $1,250 for each 5-week term
  • Housing accommodation in the Resident Vicar’s cottage* in the village of Keene Valley, New York
  • Reimbursement for approved ministry-related expenses

Terms of Service

  • On-site ministry during the designated term(s): June 28 to August 30, 2026 (full term) or June 28 to July 26, 2026, and August 2 to August 30, 2026 (half terms)
  • Pre-season and post-season administrative work not to exceed 5 hours total
  • Coordination with the preceding and succeeding Vicars
