It was wonderful to welcome Alumni back to the Close for Alumni Week.
We enjoyed a packed week, with events including a retreat, the Alumni Association Annual Meeting, the Paddock Lectures and the traditional Alumni Memorial Eucharist.
We were blessed to have the Rev. Dr. Luigi Gioia guide reflections on Marilynne Robinson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Gilead. The group explored themes of grace, self-awareness, interiority, and spiritual authenticity, as well as rediscovering how novels could enrich their faith, broaden their humanity, and deepen their joy in everyday life.
This year’s Paddock Lectures were given by The Rev. Dr. John J. Thatamanil, Professor of Theology and World Religions at Union Theological Seminary. Titled Desiring Truth: Interreligious Wisdom for the Post-Truth Crisis, Dr. Thatamanil considered the current epistemological crisis and how to overcome it. We were also honored to award the Distinguished Alumni Award to The Venerable Douglas Edwards, MDiv ’84, DMin, for the incredible work he has done in Ghana, including bringing fresh water to 210,000 people and rescuing nearly 800 children from slavery. You can read more about his work in this newsletter.
We plan to make Alumni Week in June a regular feature, so please save the date for next year’s event, which will be from Sunday June 7 to Friday June 12. The week will include the Paddock Lectures, Alumni Association Annual Meeting, Evensong and Commemoration of the Benefactors and the Alumni Memorial Eucharist, followed by the Distinguished Alumni Banquet.
In addition to these traditional events, we also want to offer a program of short courses, retreats, outings and class reunions. To help shape next year’s gathering, we’d be grateful if you could take the time to complete this short survey to share what you would like Alumni Week to offer:
